Fast-forward 20 + years: GRPU is the scourge of Golden Retrievers, and (in the authors opinion) is the leading cause of blindness in this breed in the United States. Many diseases can impair vision in dogs, including pigmentary uveitis, a serious cause of vision loss, discomfort and blindness in middle-aged and older golden retrievers. The light brown cysts can be ghostlike and nearly completely transparent, making them very hard to detect. A blind dog is not suffering, as long as the eyes are comfortable. Sometimes it is more obvious that blood is inside the eye, than #5 (fibrinous plaque). Because GRPU often develops after the prime reproductive years, it is difficult to control in a breeding program; thus, the most prudent breeding strategy is to minimize the genetic contribution of all related Golden Retrievers. Thick-walled cysts tend to be solitary, round and free floating. Elevated intraocular pressure results in the clinical signs that you may have noted at home (cloudy eye, redness, squinting). Histopathology was performed on the eviscerated contents of the glaucomatous eyes that received ISPs and all of the enucleated globes and revealed a preiridal fibrovascular membrane in 2 eyes and mild lymphocytic anterior uveitis in 2 eyes, but the extent of uveal inflammation in most cases was described as minimal and depigmentation of the uveal tract (typical of immune-mediated ocular diseases such as uveodermatologic syndrome) was not a feature on any microscopic sections. These may be seen prior to obvious inflammation, which sets the process of vision loss in motion.
